Hexagram 49: Revolution Changing to Hexagram 63: After Completion

I Ching casting meaning · GeJi Ji

Revolution arrives at completion — After Completion, where the transformation is fully realized and the new order is in place. The old regime is a memory; the new institutions are functioning; the principles are established. This is the most dangerous moment in the revolutionary arc: completed transformations immediately start decaying if not maintained, and completed revolutions immediately start generating their own internal contradictions. Celebrate briefly, then switch modes: maintain, renew, protect. The revolution after completion is vigilance disguised as normalcy. The transformations that last are the ones whose people never stopped doing the work of freedom, even after freedom looked complete. The old order can always return. The maintained revolution is the only permanent one.

A casting that moves from Revolution into After Completion means the situation you asked about is not static — it begins as one pattern and resolves into another. The first hexagram describes where you stand; the second describes where events are carrying you.

49. RevolutionGe · Fire below Lake
63. After CompletionJi Ji · Fire below Water

Highlighted in red: line 4 is moving — counted from the bottom. A moving line is where the change is actually happening: it flips from yang to yin or back, and that flip is what turns Revolution into After Completion.

The situation: Hexagram 49, Revolution

The old form burns off. Change, timed right, earns belief.

Fire and water in the same vessel — one of them is about to transform the other, and nothing stays in its old form. This is the molting hexagram: radical change, regime change, the rebrand, the moment the old skin comes off. Two things decide whether it works. Timing: move too early and nobody follows, too late and you're defending a corpse — change when the need is obvious to everyone. And justification: the new order has to be visibly better, or you're just the next thing getting overthrown. When the moment's right, commit totally. Half-revolutions are just vandalism. Molt completely, and the new skin holds.

Structurally, Revolution is Fire below Lake — the inner state meeting the outer condition. That pairing is the lens for everything above.

Where it's heading: Hexagram 63, After Completion

Everything in place. Completion is when vigilance starts.

The changed hexagram is the trajectory, not a verdict. As the moving line settles, the energy of Revolution gives way to After Completion (Ji Ji) — Fire below Water. The advice that belongs to this outcome: Celebrate briefly, then maintain everything. Order decays without vigilance.
