Hexagram 49: Revolution Changing to Hexagram 59: Dispersion

I Ching casting meaning · GeHuan

Revolution is dissolving its own walls — Dispersion, where the revolutionary identity is being deliberately melted. The us-versus-them, the old allies versus the old enemies, the pure versus the compromised — these boundaries served the fight, and now they're keeping the new order from becoming whole. Ice is the frozen revolutionary identity; warmth and motion dissolve it into a broader citizenship. Scatter the factional boundaries on purpose: integrate the former opposition where they accept the new principles, share credit for the peace with people who weren't revolutionaries, and let the warrior identity soften into a civic one. Then gather around something larger than the revolutionary struggle. The revolution that dissolves its own factions and reforms around shared nationhood becomes a country.

A casting that moves from Revolution into Dispersion means the situation you asked about is not static — it begins as one pattern and resolves into another. The first hexagram describes where you stand; the second describes where events are carrying you.

Highlighted in red: lines 1, 2, 3, 4 and 6 are moving — counted from the bottom. A moving line is where the change is actually happening: it flips from yang to yin or back, and that flip is what turns Revolution into Dispersion.

The situation: Hexagram 49, Revolution

The old form burns off. Change, timed right, earns belief.

Fire and water in the same vessel — one of them is about to transform the other, and nothing stays in its old form. This is the molting hexagram: radical change, regime change, the rebrand, the moment the old skin comes off. Two things decide whether it works. Timing: move too early and nobody follows, too late and you're defending a corpse — change when the need is obvious to everyone. And justification: the new order has to be visibly better, or you're just the next thing getting overthrown. When the moment's right, commit totally. Half-revolutions are just vandalism. Molt completely, and the new skin holds.

Structurally, Revolution is Fire below Lake — the inner state meeting the outer condition. That pairing is the lens for everything above.

Where it's heading: Hexagram 59, Dispersion

Ice breaking apart. Dissolve the walls, rally the spirit.

The changed hexagram is the trajectory, not a verdict. As the moving lines settle, the energy of Revolution gives way to Dispersion (Huan) — Water below Wind. The advice that belongs to this outcome: Melt the ice deliberately, then gather everyone around something bigger.
