Hexagram 49: Revolution Changing to Hexagram 21: Biting Through

I Ching casting meaning · GeShi He

Revolution has hit something solid — Biting Through, where the transformation removed most of the old order but left one hard obstruction that won't dissolve on its own. A holdout from the old regime, a structural flaw in the new system, a violation that revolutionary goodwill can't fix. The broad transformation was right; now precision is needed. Name the remaining obstruction, bite through it cleanly, and remove it — surgically, not with the same sweeping force that brought down the old order. Hesitation lets the last remnant become the seed of the counter-revolution. Bite once, firmly. The revolution that can do precision work after the broad stroke is the revolution that completes itself.

A casting that moves from Revolution into Biting Through means the situation you asked about is not static — it begins as one pattern and resolves into another. The first hexagram describes where you stand; the second describes where events are carrying you.

Highlighted in red: lines 3, 5 and 6 are moving — counted from the bottom. A moving line is where the change is actually happening: it flips from yang to yin or back, and that flip is what turns Revolution into Biting Through.

The situation: Hexagram 49, Revolution

The old form burns off. Change, timed right, earns belief.

Fire and water in the same vessel — one of them is about to transform the other, and nothing stays in its old form. This is the molting hexagram: radical change, regime change, the rebrand, the moment the old skin comes off. Two things decide whether it works. Timing: move too early and nobody follows, too late and you're defending a corpse — change when the need is obvious to everyone. And justification: the new order has to be visibly better, or you're just the next thing getting overthrown. When the moment's right, commit totally. Half-revolutions are just vandalism. Molt completely, and the new skin holds.

Structurally, Revolution is Fire below Lake — the inner state meeting the outer condition. That pairing is the lens for everything above.

Where it's heading: Hexagram 21, Biting Through

An obstruction must be bitten through. Decide and enforce.

The changed hexagram is the trajectory, not a verdict. As the moving lines settle, the energy of Revolution gives way to Biting Through (Shi He) — Thunder below Fire. The advice that belongs to this outcome: Name the obstruction and bite through it once — firmly, fairly, finally.
